New Delhi Railway Station Stampede News: Authorities paid Rs 10 lakh each in compensation to the families of the people who lost their lives in a stampede that occurred late on Saturday. Eighteen people lost their lives while more than a dozen sustained injuries in the stampede, reportedly caused by a rush of people waiting on platforms 14 at 15 of the New Delhi Railway Station to board trains to Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, where the Maha Kumbh festival is underway.

Several accidents have been reported at the grand festival visited by people in large numbers to take holy dips at ‘Sangam’, a confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna and Saraswati rivers considered sacred in Hindu tradition. The confluence is characterised by the distinct colours of the three merging rivers.

A compensation of Rs 2.5 lakh each to two individuals sustaining serious injuries at the New Delhi station stampede was also paid. Ten others, having sustained minor injuries, received a compensation of Rs 1 lakh each.

Eleven out of the total 15 injured passengers admitted were discharged from the hospital after being treated.

The accident comes days after Delhiites elected Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for a majority of 48 seats in the 70-seat legislative Assembly, voting out the incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which secured 22 seats to now become the main opposition in the nations capital.

Acting Chief Minister Atishi, who was asked to continue as the caretaker CM after she resigned last Sunday, said that 15 people were brought dead while those who sustained injuries were being treated at the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) hospital.

"Distressed by the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured have a speedy recovery,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on microblogging site X (formerly Twitter).

“The authorities are assisting all those who have been affected by this stampede," PM Modi wrote.

When Did the New Delhi Station Stampede Occur? What Caused it?

The stampede broke out reportedly around 9:55 pm.

Onlookers said that a sudden rush of crowd at the station led to the stampede with several passengers fainting because of suffocation.

The DCP (Raiilway) said platform number 14 was already very crowded when the Prayagraj Express train was waiting there for its departure.

The officer said Swatantra Senani Express and Bhubaneshwar Rajdhani Express were delayed and the passengers of these trains were also present on platform numbers 12, 13 and 14.

"As per CMI, every hour 1,500 general tickets were sold by railways due to which the station got overcrowded and became uncontrollable. There was a stampede at platform no. 14 and near escalator near platform no. 16," the DCP said.

A number of rescue teams and fire tenders were rushed to the site to control the situation, authorities said.
