A joint team of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) Danapur and the Government Railway Police (GRP) Jhajha carried out a major operation in Jamui, Bihar, on Saturday night, seizing Rs 70 lakh in cash from a passenger aboard the Duronto Express. The Income Tax Department has been informed, and an investigation is underway to ascertain the source and legitimacy of the cash.
The operation was initiated when the train escort team got advanced information from the Security Control Room at Danapur about a special check being carried out at Jhajha station. The RPF and GRP teams entering at platform no. 2 straight away started checking the S-3 coach.
Officials who were inspecting the area observed a person with a black backpack sitting strangely. Upon being asked about the backpack's contents, he said that he had only books. But his behavior attracted the attention of the team and they decided to go for a full search.
Upon opening the bag, the officers discovered 28 bundles of currency notes, totaling approximately Rs 70 lakh. Officials were stunned at the sheer amount of cash left behind. The passenger was identified as Shyamsunder Das, a resident of Regarpura, Karol Bagh, Delhi.
During questioning, Das revealed that the bag had been handed to him by Sukhdev Nayak, a servant at a temple in Karol Bagh. He claimed the money was to be delivered to Kolkata but failed to provide clear details about the owner or the purpose of the transfer.
The RPF and the GRP initiated a thorough investigation to find out whether Das was just a courier or if he was more involved in the transaction. Moreover, the authorities are working together with the Income Tax Department to check if the money is coming from legal sources or is connected to crime.
This incident has brought to the surface the issue of large amounts of cash which are not accounted for passing through passenger trains. The officials are still investigating the issue and more information will be released after the Income Tax Department wraps up its initial evaluation.
