The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd. (IRCTC) has introduced E-Pantry as a new service, providing train passengers with a new travel experience and increased comfort.

Pre-order meals for hassle-free travel

Passengers on specific Mail and Express trains that do not include meals in their ticket price now have the option to pre-order their meals through the online platform, which IRCTC operates to support India's hospitality and tourism industry.

The IRCTC website (www.irctc.co.in) enables passengers who hold confirmed tickets or RAC tickets, or partial confirmed tickets, to pre-order standard meals and Rail Neer beverages, according to the IRCTC press release.

The pantry car staff will deliver pre-booked meals to passengers at their seats during the travel day, which creates an efficient and stress-free meal service process.

Digital convenience and benefits

The digital meal booking system provides multiple advantages, which include customers making payments without cash, restaurants confirming delivery through Meal Verification Codes and customers tracking their orders throughout the process.

E-Pantry provides passengers with an additional benefit because it enables them to travel on long-distance trains without needing to worry about their meals, which will be delivered to them at the scheduled time.

The E-Pantry booking process is simple:

  • Booking: Passengers can select the E-Pantry meal option while booking tickets online or from their booked ticket history.
  • Confirmation: Passengers receive their confirmation message and Meal Verification Code (MVC) through SMS or email after the completion of booking.
  • Delivery: Passengers present their MVC to pantry staff on travel day, and will receive their pre-ordered meals at their seats.

Passengers can conveniently pay fares through digital methods

Multiple advantages are included with this service. Passengers can pay their fares through digital methods, which create an easy and smooth payment process.

The MVC system ensures that meals are delivered to the correct passenger, while the digital dashboard provides complete order tracking and order visibility.

Refund requests can be made via multiple digital platforms

The passenger can request a refund for an undelivered meal through email, SMS or WhatsApp, which will be used to deliver the refund request.

The E-Pantry service was first tested on the Vivek Express, India’s longest-distance train, and is now available on 25 Mail and Express trains, including popular services like Swatantrata Senani Express, Chhattisgarh Express, Mangaldweep Express, and Purushottam Express.

The rollout is aimed at providing better services for long journeys, ensuring passengers have access to hygienic and timely meals.

Technology enhances convenience, transparency, and operational efficiency on trains

IRCTC’s E-Pantry initiative not only improves passenger convenience but also demonstrates how technology can make railway travel more comfortable and efficient.

Passengers who pre-order their meals will receive their food during their trip, while the digital system maintains operational transparency to track all activities.

E-Pantry marks a major advancement that provides modern technology-based solutions for travellers while India improves its digital services and passenger experience.

The system provides users with multiple benefits because it delivers clear information and helps them travel by train without difficulties.
