The CTS (Clean Train Station) was launched by the Ministry of Railways in October 2002 to meet the demand for cleaner train coaches and toilets. Trains will undergo mechanised cleaning during halts at specified stations on major trunk routes as part of the scheme. The CTS scheme facilitates the mechanised cleaning of coaches of mail/express trains, ensuring the speedy and effective cleaning of coaches, train toilets, the removal of garbage from coaches, platform side windows of trains, doors, aisles, footboards, and the vestibule area of coaches.
Faster, Cleaner Trains: Railways launches revamped CTS scheme
Indian Railways is modernising en-route cleanliness with a revamped Clean Train Station (CTS) scheme, featuring a strict 10-minute cleaning deadline. The initiative aims to enhance train cleanliness with minimal operational disruption.
Railway cleaning gets an upgrade
The revamped Clean Train Station scheme includes new equipment and uniforms. Staff will wear uniforms to maintain cleanliness standards. Battery-operated portable vacuum cleaners will be used for efficient cleaning. Backpack-type high-pressure jet cleaning machines will also be deployed. A new 10-minute deadline has been set for cleaning trains. This aims to enhance the passenger experience and hygiene.
Enhanced cleaning measures
The revamped Clean Train Station scheme will be implemented at 20 locations for 683 trains. Two staff members will be assigned to clean four toilets and washbasins in two coaches. Their tasks will include collecting garbage and mechanized jet cleaning. They will also dry mop the toilet floors and the surrounding areas. This initiative aims to improve train cleanliness and hygiene standards.
Modern cleaning equipment
Cleaners will be equipped with portable backpack-type high-pressure jet cleaning machines. These machines will have 10-15 liter water tanks and be battery-operated. They will also use battery-operated portable vacuum cleaners. Additional tools include ergonomic brushes for washbasins and absorbent mops. These modern tools aim to enhance cleaning efficiency and effectiveness.
Working model
When the train halts, two cleaners will work together to clean the toilets. One will use a high-pressure jet spray on the toilet bowls and walls. The other vacuums and mops the floor dry. Dustbins are emptied, basins scrubbed, and floors wiped clean. All tasks are mandated to be completed within 10 minutes, even as passengers board and deboard. Cleaning is expected to be swift and efficient.
To speed up cleaning, staff uniforms include pocket-loaded aprons and trousers. These carry essentials like chemicals and brushes, making the process hands-free. The revamped CTS protocol was first tested by Northern Railway. After success, the Railway Board approved it for nationwide rollout. This aims to enhance efficiency and cleanliness.
