Good news for Delhi-NCR travellers: Thousands of commuters travelling through North-West Delhi may soon get major traffic relief as Indian Railways has approved two key infrastructure projects aimed at easing congestion around Mukarba Chowk, Outer Ring Road and Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar - some of the capital’s busiest traffic corridors.
The approved projects include widening of the Haiderpur-Badli Railway Overbridge (ROB) on Outer Ring Road and construction of an elevated loop connecting Shalimar Bagh with Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar across railway tracks. Both projects are expected to improve traffic flow, reduce travel time and strengthen connectivity in North-West Delhi.
The projects received in-principle approval after detailed technical scrutiny by Northern Railway and clearance from the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM).
Welcoming the move, Rekha Gupta thanked Narendra Modi and Ashwini Vaishnaw, saying the projects would help pave the way for a “Viksit Delhi” with faster, safer and smoother transport connectivity.
The widening of the Railway Overbridge at Haiderpur-Badli is expected to provide major relief at Mukarba Chowk, one of Delhi’s busiest traffic intersections. The area witnesses heavy daily movement of:
Officials said congestion at Mukarba Chowk and Outer Ring Road has remained a long-standing issue because of rising traffic pressure in the corridor. Once widened, the ROB is expected to:
The second major project cleared by Railways is an elevated loop connecting:
The elevated structure will pass over railway tracks and is aimed at improving movement in one of Delhi’s busiest freight and transport zones.
The corridor handles heavy commercial traffic daily, leading to severe congestion during peak hours. Officials said the elevated loop is expected to:
According to the Delhi government, areas such as Mukarba Chowk, Outer Ring Road and Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar have long faced severe traffic congestion due to heavy vehicular movement and growing pressure on transport infrastructure. Thousands of commuters, commercial vehicles and goods carriers pass through these corridors every day, often resulting in long traffic jams, peak-hour delays, slower freight movement and increased travel time for office-goers. The government said the newly approved projects are part of a broader plan to identify major traffic bottlenecks and develop long-term solutions to improve connectivity and ease congestion across the city.
Rekha Gupta said the Delhi government is committed to building a modern, safe and uninterrupted transport network across the national capital.
She said the Public Works Department (PWD) had submitted technical drawings and proposals to the Railways, following which the projects were approved after detailed scrutiny.
The Chief Minister added that Railways has directed construction work to follow strict safety standards and technical supervision so that railway operations and traffic movement are not affected in future. Gupta said the projects will:
She also said infrastructure and transport reforms are gaining momentum through the coordinated efforts of the “double-engine government”.
For commuters in North-West Delhi, the projects could mean:
