Good news for Delhi-NCR passengers: Passengers travelling across Delhi-NCR may soon get smoother and less crowded Metro journeys as Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced 24 additional Metro trips every Monday starting May 18 to encourage greater use of public transport instead of private vehicles.

The move comes after Narendra Modi appealed to citizens to increase the use of public transport to help reduce fuel consumption and promote sustainable urban mobility.

DMRC said six additional trains will be introduced every Monday, while services could also be expanded further on other days depending on passenger demand and crowd levels.

Delhi Metro to run 24 extra trips every Monday

According to DMRC, the additional Metro services will begin from May 18 and are aimed at handling rising passenger movement during peak office hours.

The corporation said passenger demand will be monitored closely and more services may be added in the coming days if required.

Officials said the additional trips are expected to:

  • Reduce crowding during peak hours
  • Improve passenger convenience
  • Encourage people to avoid private vehicles
  • Reduce pressure on Delhi-NCR roads

The move is part of a larger push towards public transport usage and reduction in petrol and diesel consumption.

Extra security, faster frisking: DMRC’s new Metro crowd plan explained

To handle possible increase in passenger traffic, DMRC said security and passenger movement systems are also being strengthened across stations. The measures include:

  • Additional security personnel deployment
  • More baggage scanners and DFMD machines
  • Extra ticketing counters
  • Faster frisking and passenger movement management
  • Additional customer facilitation staff

DMRC said the aim is to reduce waiting time and ensure smooth passenger flow during rush hours.

Delhi Metro connectivity to airport, railway stations, RRTS explained

DMRC highlighted that the Metro network now offers seamless connectivity to major transport hubs across Delhi-NCR, including:

  • Railway stations
  • Airport terminals
  • ISBTs
  • Namo Bharat RRTS
  • Noida Metro
  • Gurugram Rapid Metro

Officials said the integrated transport system allows commuters to travel across Delhi-NCR more efficiently without depending heavily on private vehicles. The Metro network also connects major commercial markets, office hubs, educational institutions and tourist destinations across the region.

Last-mile connectivity at 160 Metro stations

DMRC said strengthening last-mile connectivity remains one of its biggest focus areas.

Currently, around 160 Metro stations offer last-mile services including:

  • E-rickshaws
  • E-autos
  • Bike taxis
  • Cab aggregators
  • Bicycle rentals
  • Feeder bus services

According to DMRC, nearly one lakh passengers use these facilities daily. The corporation also said DTC’s 1,500 electric buses are providing last-mile services at 52 Metro stations, while hydrogen-based bus services have also started in the Central Vista area.

Park & Ride facility available at 126 Metro stations

To encourage commuters to shift from private vehicles to public transport, DMRC said Park & Ride facilities are currently operational at 126 Metro stations across Delhi-NCR.

The facility allows passengers to park their vehicles at stations and continue the rest of the journey through Metro services.

Officials said the initiative is aimed at:

  • Reducing traffic congestion
  • Lowering fuel consumption
  • Improving urban mobility
  • Reducing parking pressure in crowded areas

DMRC is also expanding digital ticketing systems to reduce queues and improve passenger convenience. Passengers can now use:

  • QR code tickets
  • WhatsApp ticket booking
  • National Common Mobility Card (NCMC)
  • UPI payments
  • Paytm, PhonePe, Amazon and IRCTC integrations

DMRC said the Metro Sarthi App now allows passengers to book Metro tickets and last-mile services through a single integrated platform.

Why DMRC is encouraging more people to use Metro

According to DMRC, the initiative is part of a broader effort to reduce dependency on petrol and diesel and promote sustainable urban transport solutions.

Officials said increased use of Metro and public transport can help:

  • Reduce traffic congestion
  • Lower pollution levels
