Crowds, security, rush hours—Can a robot handle it all? Meet ASC ARJUN
With ASC ARJUN, East Coast Railway has taken a strong step towards the future of smart railway stations in India.

East Coast Railway has introduced a humanoid robot named “ASC ARJUN” at Visakhapatnam Railway Station for better passenger safety and services. The robot has been deployed under the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and is the first humanoid robot of its kind in Indian Railways.

The humanoid robot was unveiled by Inspector General of RPF Shri Alok Bohra and Divisional Railway Manager Shri Lalit Bohra in the presence of Senior Divisional Security Commandant (RPF) Shri A. K. Dubey at the station.

The robot is part of RPF’s efforts to modernise railway security and improve passenger experience using digital and smart technologies.

What is ASC ARJUN?

ASC ARJUN is a humanoid robot designed to help RPF staff in many railway operations. It will support security, passenger help, crowd control, cleanliness checks, and safety awareness at the station.

The robot has been fully designed and developed in Visakhapatnam using indigenous technology. The team led by Shri A. K. Dubey worked for more than one year to develop the advanced system under the supervision of senior railway officials.

The project shows that Indian Railways has strengthened its dedication to developing new technologies while protecting passenger safety and providing customer-focused services.

How will ASC ARJUN improve railway security?

ASC ARJUN plays an important role in strengthening station security. One of its key features is intrusion detection. Using a Face Recognition System (FRS), the robot can identify intruders and send instant alerts to RPF staff through IoT-based systems. This helps security teams act faster and reduces response time.

The robot supports platform patrolling, which enables it to move along predetermined paths. The system detects obstacles while patrolling designated areas throughout the entire day. The system enables security personnel to operate more efficiently because it maintains security monitoring at all times.

Can ASC ARJUN manage crowds at busy stations?

ASC ARJUN uses AI-powered crowd control systems for its operations. The system monitors passenger flow at peak times and notifies control room operators when it detects increased passenger congestion.

RPF teams utilise this system to identify crowd issues during peak times, which typically occur during festivals and holidays, as well as during regular rush hour periods. The robot also helps guide passengers effectively during such times.

How does the robot help passengers directly?

ASC ARJUN provides easy access for all passengers. The system utilises basic hand movements to communicate with users while delivering important information. The robot uses its announcement system to deliver safety messages to passengers in three languages, which include English, Hindi, and Telugu.

The system uses various cultural gestures to greet passengers through a Namaste greeting and a salute to RPF officers, which creates an inviting atmosphere.

Passengers can easily access the robot because its basic design allows them to trust it when they need assistance.

What safety features does ASC ARJUN have?

Passenger safety is a key focus of this initiative. The robot is fitted with fire and smoke detection systems. In case of any danger, it sends instant alerts so that emergency action can be taken quickly.

ASC ARJUN also offers real-time situational awareness through a connected dashboard, helping RPF control rooms make better and faster decisions.

What do railway officials say about this initiative?

Shri Alok Bohra, IG (RPF), said that the introduction of ASC ARJUN marks a pioneering initiative in adopting cutting-edge technology to strengthen railway security, improve passenger experience and support frontline staff. Indian Railway remains committed to embracing innovation for creating a safe, secure and passenger-friendly railway ecosystem.

With ASC ARJUN, East Coast Railway has taken a strong step towards the future of smart railway stations in India.
