Indian Railways to introduce 50 'Namo Bharat' trains, expand MEMU coaches, stations in major overhaul
In a significant development aimed at modernising India’s railway infrastructure, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced a series of transformative steps, including the introduction of longer MEMU trains, new high-speed services, and upgraded stations across the country.

With the aim of modernising India's railway infrastructure, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav on Tuesday, July 17 announced a series of transformative steps. These includes the introduction of longer MEMU trains, new high speed services and upgraded stations across the country.
To increase the capacity of local passenger trains, Railways will now manufacture 16- and 20-coach MEMU (mainline electric multiple units) trains, he added. This will be the upgrade from current 8-coach trains that are usually used in short distance travel.
Additionally, the Ministry has approved the production of 50 new 'Namo Bharat' trains. These are expected to accelerate the next generation technology and Indian tracks. Parallel to this, 1,300 'Amrit Bharat' stations are currently under development, in which more stations are to be added as part of the expansion of the infrastructure running by December.
Highlighting the increasing dependence on rail transport, Vaishnav said that 720 crore passengers were traveled by Indian Railways last year. The Indian Railway Network is now the second largest in the world in terms of both cargo and passenger transport.
Efforts are also being made to improve transparency in ticket booking and prevent the impact of middlemen. From July 1, all Tatkal ticket booking will require OTP-based verification, which aims to eliminate broker intervention and ensure a proper booking process.
Furthermore, Indian Railways is preparing to release reservation charts 24 hours in advance, a move that is already receiving positive feedback and is likely to be implemented nationwide soon.
These initiatives reflect the government's commitment to creating a more efficient, secure, and passenger-friendly rail system across India.
