India's sugar industry is seeing a significant drop in production for the 2025 sugar season (SSY25). The total output is expected to be less than 27 million metric tons (MMT), down from 31.8 MMT last year, according to a report by Centrum. As of February 15, 2025, sugar production is at 19.77 MMT, showing a 12% decrease compared to the same time last year. The decline is mainly due to more sugar being used for ethanol production, fewer sugarcane crops available, and lower sugar recovery levels.
