If you are an Income Tax Assessee and still not linked your PAN with Aadhaar, you must do it in the next 14 days. As per the guidelines, it is mandatory to link your PAN with Aadhaar card prior to 31st March. In case the taxpayer fails to do that, he/she will not be able to file Income Tax returns or claim their respective refunds. Also, if your PAN has not been updated or corrected with right details like name, DOB, etc, you will not be able to complete important tasks like filling tax, claiming tax refunds etc. A PAN card is an essential document for all of your major financial transactions and activities. It is very important to get it linked with your Aadhaar and update it with all the correct details. There have been a number of cases, where it proved costly to people who had wrong credentials on their PAN. Even a small mistake in PAN or ITR forms could prove really hectic and costly to the taxpayers.
However, updating a PAN is not very difficult and time-consuming. It can be updated online from the comfort of your home in a few minutes. All you need is the correct information or credentials that is to be updated against the older ones. In order to correct the spelling of your name through an e-mail, you need to fill in a form, which can be downloaded at a prescribed format from- http://www.incometaxindia.gov.in/archive/changeform.pdf
The documents for age proof, name proof or address proof needs to be enclosed with the filled form. However, in case the incorrect name printed on the PAN card is written by the Income Tax Department, a document on which your name is printed correctly can be submitted only. Also, if you have changed your name, you will have to give a copy of the official gazette which has your changed name printed on it.
After all this process, you will receive an SMS or email from the Income Tax Department, having details of updated credentials on your PAN. If you approve the changes, it will take a few more days to complete the whole procedure.
