The Winter Session of Parliament will commence on December 1 and is expected to run until December 19, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju announced on Saturday.

In a post on X, Rijiju said President Droupadi Murmu has approved the government's proposal to convene the session, “subject to exigencies of Parliamentary business.” He expressed hope that the session would see smooth and productive proceedings, adding that it should “strengthen democracy and serve the aspirations of the people.”

The upcoming session follows a lacklustre Monsoon Session, which saw 21 sittings between July 21 and August 21 but recorded low productivity due to repeated disruptions. Lok Sabha functioned for just 37 hours out of the scheduled 120 hours, while Rajya Sabha managed 41 hours and 15 minutes — reflecting productivity of 31 per cent and 38.8 per cent respectively.

With key legislative business pending, the government is expected to push for a more orderly Winter Session, while the Opposition is likely to raise issues that were left unresolved in the previous session.

This Winter Session will also be the first for Vice President C P Radhakrishnan in his role as Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. He took oath as the 15th Vice President of India on September 12.

On October 21, Radhakrishnan toured various sections of the Rajya Sabha Secretariat, including the Legislative Section, Table Office, Question Branch, Members’ Amenities Section, and Bill Office. He interacted with staff members, commended their contribution to the functioning of the Upper House, and encouraged them to continue working with professionalism and dedication.

During the visit, he also extended Diwali greetings to the staff and emphasised the need to uphold the efficiency and integrity of parliamentary processes.
