What Trump just said about escalating Indo-Pak tensions post-Pahalgam terror attack

In the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 civilian lives, US President Donald Trump commented on the longstanding tensions between India and Pakistan, saying the two nations will resolve the matter “one way or the other”.

Responding to a question on the rising tensions between the neighbours and whether he would be speaking to their leaders, Trump said on Friday, “I am very close to India and I'm very close to Pakistan, as you know. And they've had that fight for 1,000 years in Kashmir. Kashmir has been going on for 1,000 years, probably longer than that. And it was a bad one yesterday, though, that was a bad one. Over 30 people,” he said during an interaction with reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Rome, as PTI reported.

He added, “There have been tensions on that border for 1,500 years. So you know, the same as it's been, but they'll get it figured out one way or the other. I'm sure... I know both leaders. There is great tension between Pakistan and India. But there always has been.”

UNSC slams Pahalgam terror attack

Meanwhile, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) strongly condemned the attack in Jammu and Kashmir, calling for the perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors to be held accountable.

“The members of the Security Council underlined the need to hold perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of this reprehensible act of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice,” the UNSC said in a press statement.

The 15-member Council issued the statement in response to the April 22 terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir that left at least 26 people dead and several others injured.

Following the attack, India suspended the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) and announced a downgrading of diplomatic ties with Pakistan. The decision was taken after Tuesday’s attack in Pahalgam, where the victims were mostly tourists.

Responsibility for the attack was claimed by The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy of the banned Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba.

In retaliation, Pakistan on Thursday threatened to suspend the Simla Agreement and freeze other bilateral arrangements with India. It also halted trade, shut its airspace to Indian carriers, and warned that any move by India to divert water allocated under the Indus Water Treaty would be treated as an act of war.

Additionally, Islamabad closed the Wagah border, revoked visas issued to Indian nationals under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES), and asked Indian military advisers at its High Commission to leave—actions mirroring New Delhi’s post-attack diplomatic measures.

Pahalgam terror attack

On Tuesday afternoon (April 22, 2025) terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists in Baisaran Valley, a scenic area in Pahalgam often referred to as ‘mini Switzerland’ for its snow-capped vistas. The attack took place around 2:30 pm, killing at least 26 people in what has become one of the deadliest incidents in Jammu and Kashmir since Article 370 was abrogated in 2019.
