West Bengal Panchayat elections 2018: Big triumph for Mamata Banerjee even though polls still pending

There will be no polling in 20,076 seats of the total 58,692 seats in the forthcoming three-tier panchayat elections in West Bengal. The seats will go to the candidates of the ruling Trinamool Congress as there are no other parties in the fray.

There will be no polling in 20,076 seats of the total 58,692 seats in the forthcoming three-tier panchayat elections in West Bengal. The seats will go to the candidates of the ruling Trinamool Congress as there are no other parties in the fray.
The panchayat elections will be held in a single phase on May 14 and the results are likely to be declared three days later. The victory by TMC under the ‘unopposed’ category translates to a whopping 34 per cent and is a record in the history of rural body elections in the state. The earlier best in 2003 when the CPI(M) had won 11 per cent seats without a fight.

Most of the seats where the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC has won uncontested are in the districts of Birbhum, Bankura, Murshidabad and South 24 Parganas, according to information released by the State Election Commission.
