Union Minister Piyush Goyal is set to introduce the Jan Vishwas (Amendment) Bill, 2025 in the Lok Sabha on Monday, August 18, aimed at decriminalising certain minor offences to promote ease of living and ease of doing business.
According to the list of business published on the Lok Sabha website, the Bill seeks to amend several enactments to rationalise penalties and remove criminal provisions in minor matters. It proposes amendments to more than 350 provisions across different laws.
The initiative is expected to create a more business-friendly and citizen-centric environment in the country. The measure is part of the government’s broader effort to simplify regulations and improve India’s business climate.
This follows the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Act, 2023, which had decriminalised 183 provisions in 42 central Acts administered by 19 ministries and departments. That Act replaced imprisonment clauses with fines or monetary penalties in many cases.
The Bill will subsequently be sent to a parliamentary committee for consideration, and the committee is expected to submit its report by the first day of the next session.
Moreover, a special discussion was also held on India’s first astronaut aboard the International Space Station, highlighting the critical role of the space programme in achieving the vision of a "Developed India by 2047".
