The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday, March 10, approved the proposal to declare Madurai airport in Tamil Nadu as an international airport. The decision is expected to significantly improve global connectivity for the temple city and give a major push to tourism, trade and economic development in the southern districts of the state.

Announcing the decision after the Cabinet meeting, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the move reflects the long-standing aspirations of people in Madurai and surrounding regions. He said the government took the decision keeping in mind the growing importance of the city as a cultural, industrial and educational hub in Tamil Nadu.

Vaishnaw noted that Madurai is among the three major urban centres in Tamil Nadu along with Chennai and Coimbatore, and residents have long demanded direct international connectivity from the city.

A long-standing demand from the region

The minister said the decision to grant international status to Madurai airport was taken after considering the aspirations of people in the region and the city’s increasing importance in the state’s economy.

“People have aspired to have an international airport in Madurai for a long time. Keeping these aspirations in mind, the Prime Minister approved the proposal in the Union Cabinet. This will bring a major change in the development of Madurai and surrounding areas,” Vaishnaw said while briefing reporters.

The new status will allow airlines to operate international flights directly from Madurai, improving connectivity with global destinations and reducing the need for travellers to route through other major airports.

Boost for tourism and pilgrimage travel

Madurai is widely known as the temple city of Tamil Nadu and attracts millions of visitors every year for religious and cultural tourism. The airport plays a key role in connecting travellers to several important pilgrimage destinations in the region.

Officials said international connectivity is expected to increase the number of foreign tourists and pilgrims visiting the area.

Key religious destinations in and around Madurai include the Meenakshi Amman Temple, Koodal Azhagar Temple, Thirupparankundram Murugan Temple and Palamudhircholai Murugan Temple. Improved international flight connections could make travel easier for devotees and tourists coming from Southeast Asia, the Middle East and other parts of the world.

Improved connectivity for trade and industry

Apart from tourism, the decision is expected to support business and industrial activity in the region. Madurai and nearby districts have several manufacturing units, textile industries and small and medium enterprises that rely on efficient transport and connectivity. Officials also said multiple airlines have shown interest in expanding their international flight operations from Madurai once the airport receives the new status.

The move is also expected to attract more investment into southern Tamil Nadu as improved connectivity often plays a crucial role in industrial growth.

Strengthening Madurai’s role as an education and healthcare centre

Madurai has also emerged as an important centre for higher education and healthcare in southern India. The city hosts several universities, colleges and hospitals that attract students and patients from neighbouring states as well as overseas. Officials said the airport upgrade could further strengthen the city’s role as a regional hub for education and healthcare services.

One of the oldest airports in Tamil Nadu

Madurai airport is among the oldest airports in Tamil Nadu and serves as a key gateway for the southern districts of the state. Over the years, passenger traffic at the airport has steadily increased due to growing tourism, business activity and regional travel.
