What Happened in the July 2024 Budget?

In her July 2024 Budget speech, Nirmala Sitharaman increased the number of tax slabs in the new tax regime to six.

Here are the new tax slabs in the regime:

  • Rs 0 - Rs 3 lakh: nil tax
  • Rs 3 lakh - Rs 7 lakh: 5 per cent
  • Rs 7 lakh - Rs 10 lakh: 10 per cent
  • Rs 10 lakh - Rs 12 lakh: 15 per cent
  • Rs 12 lakh - Rs 15 lakh: 20 per cent
  • Above Rs 15 lakh: 30 per cent

Another key announcement during the July 2024 Budget was the increase in the standard deduction limit for taxpayers under the new tax regime, from Rs 50,000 to Rs 75,000.
