The ministry said the discussion reflected a shared commitment to build a “deeper and mutually beneficial cooperation” between India and the EU.</p>

<p>The meeting underscored India’s efforts to broaden its global trade relationships beyond traditional partners while maintaining a focus on sustainable and inclusive economic growth. Officials noted that the engagement with INTA aligns with India’s broader goal of fostering a more balanced and diversified trade portfolio, particularly at a time when global supply chains are being redefined.</p>
<p>Sitharaman’s meeting followed Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal’s visit to Brussels earlier this week, from 26 to 28 October, where he held discussions with European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maros Sefcovic and his team. According to a statement from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the talks in Brussels were “productive and meaningful”, covering outstanding issues related to the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA).</p>
<h2><strong>Progress on India-EU FTA talks</strong></h2>
<p>Both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to concluding the India-EU FTA by the end of 2025, following the direction set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during the College of Commissioners’ visit to New Delhi in February. The proposed agreement aims to establish a comprehensive and equitable framework for trade, covering areas such as goods, services, investment, digital trade, and sustainability standards. Once finalised, the FTA is expected to significantly boost trade volumes, with the EU already being one of India’s largest trading partners and a key source of foreign investment.</p>

<p>Officials from both sides emphasised that the ongoing engagements represent a maturing strategic partnership based on shared democratic values and economic complementarity.
