In a bid to reconnect the national capital with its ancient roots, BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal has urged the Centre to rename Delhi as “Indraprastha”, citing its deep civilisational, historical, and cultural heritage.
In a letter addressed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday, Khandelwal said Delhi’s legacy stretches back thousands of years and embodies the essence of Indian civilisation. He noted that the city was originally founded as Indraprastha by the Pandavas during the Mahabharata era, symbolising dharma, justice, and governance based on moral principles.

Khandelwal put forth the idea to rename the Old Delhi Railway Station as "Indraprastha Junction" and the Indira Gandhi International Airport as "Indraprastha Airport." Besides, he recommended the installation of large statues of the Pandavas at a significant place in the capital as a tribute to their contribution in establishing Indraprastha as the center of just governance.

<h2>'Renaming Delhi will restore its ancient identity'</h2>
Khandelwal called the move to reinstate the old name of the city “an act of historical justice and cultural revival”. He went on to compare the situation to that of other historically important cities like Ayodhya, Prayagraj, Ujjain, and Varanasi and argued, “When other ancient cities are being restored to their original names, Delhi too deserves to reclaim its glorious identity as Indraprastha.”
By following the history of Delhi, he pointed out that the area has been inhabited without interruptions since the time of the Mahabharata, playing a central role in trade and politics during the Mauryan, Gupta, Rajput, Sultanate, Mughal, and British periods.

Khandelwal also argued that renaming Delhi would promote spiritual and cultural tourism, generate employment, and strengthen the local economy. He said the move would enhance India’s global identity as a civilisation proud of its heritage.
“Delhi is not merely a modern capital but the living legacy of the great city of ‘Indraprastha’ from the Mahabharata era, where governance based on dharma and ethics was first established,” Khandelwal wrote. “The time has come to restore to our national capital its true name and identity.”
He added, “Renaming Delhi as ‘Indraprastha’ will restore history and symbolize our civilisational pride. The name represents India’s ancient values of righteousness, governance, and culture. It will enrich national pride, inspire future generations, and open new avenues for tourism, employment, and economic growth.”
