Delhi is set to see tighter water management this summer as Rekha Gupta chaired a high-level review meeting to assess preparedness amid rising temperatures. The move comes as the Delhi government rolls out a detailed water supply plan aimed at ensuring uninterrupted supply, faster grievance redressal and targeted support for water-scarce areas during peak demand.

The meeting, held at the Secretariat on Monday, reviewed progress of key water projects. Gupta directed officials to ensure there is no lapse in supply or response, warning that negligence would invite strict action. “Our focus is not limited to immediate relief. We are simultaneously working on long-term solutions to free Delhi from recurring drinking water shortages,” she said.

Senior officials, including Water Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh and Chief Secretary Rajiv Verma, along with teams from the Delhi Jal Board, attended the review.

Delhi peak summer plan: Plants on full capacity, tighter monitoring

To handle the heatwave-driven demand surge, the government has ordered all major water treatment plants to operate at peak capacity.

These include facilities at:

  • Sonia Vihar
  • Bhagirathi
  • Chandrawal
  • Wazirabad
  • Haiderpur
  • Nangloi
  • Okhla
  • Bawana
  • Dwarka

Officials have also been asked to closely coordinate with Haryana to monitor ammonia levels in raw water, ensuring smooth functioning of treatment plants.

Authorities have identified water-stressed areas and put in place targeted supply arrangements to bridge demand gaps.

More tankers, tubewells, supply points: what has changed?

The government has significantly scaled up infrastructure to improve last-mile delivery:

  • Tubewells increased from 5,834 to 6,200
  • Water tankers increased from 1,166 to 1,210
  • Fixed supply points expanded from 8,700 to 13,000
  • Filling hydrants increased from 198 to 202

To further strengthen supply in vulnerable areas, 1,210 tankers have been deployed, with 100 additional tankers kept on standby.

Deployment has been planned constituency-wise, with focus on high-demand zones such as:

  • Sangam Vihar
  • Matiala
  • Chhatarpur
  • Deoli
  • Tughlakabad
  • Palam
  • Bijwasan
  • Bawana

Detailed planning includes colony-wise supply schedules, tanker routes and resource allocation.

24×7 helplines, emergency centres to tackle complaints

The government has strengthened its grievance redressal system to ensure quick response during peak summer.

Key measures include:

  • 24×7 helplines: 1916 and 1800117118
  • Complaints routed directly to concerned junior engineers
  • 100 per cent feedback tracking
  • Central control room and chatbot-based system
  • PPP-mode call centres in select areas

Additionally, 28 water emergency centres have been set up across the city. These operate round the clock and are equipped with staff, communication systems and CCTV surveillance to resolve supply issues quickly.

New projects, pipeline upgrades and leak checks

The Chief Minister has directed officials to fast-track key projects aimed at boosting long-term supply.

These include:

  • Commissioning of a second 50 MGD water treatment plant in Dwarka
  • Operationalisation of a 2 MGD recycling plant at Bawana

Infrastructure upgrades already underway include:

  • Installation of 520 additional tubewells
  • Replacement of 172 km of old pipelines in 2025–26
  • Valve regulation and new pipeline laying
  • Large-scale sewer line cleaning
  • Preventive maintenance of pump sets and booster stations
  • Leak detection and repair drives across the network

What it means for residents?

For Delhi residents, the plan aims to ensure:

  • More reliable water supply during peak summer
  • Faster complaint resolution
  • Better coverage in water-scarce areas
  • Reduced disruptions due to leakages or system failures
