Early career and appointment as CEC
Shri Rajiv Kumar, an IAS officer of the 1984 Bihar/Jharkhand cadre, brought over 40 years of diverse administrative experience to the Election Commission. He joined the ECI as Election Commissioner on September 1, 2020, and assumed charge as CEC on May 15, 2022. Before his tenure at the ECI, Shri Kumar served in prominent roles, including Finance Secretary of India, Secretary of Financial Services, and Chairman of the Public Enterprises Selection Board.

- Conduct of comprehensive elections:
Shri Kumar successfully managed elections across 31 states and Union Territories, including the Lok Sabha elections in 2024, Legislative Assembly elections in 11 states, and the Presidential and Vice-Presidential elections in 2022. His meticulous planning ensured violence-free elections with minimal re-polls, setting a benchmark for electoral management. - Technological advancements:
As a strong advocate of technology, Shri Kumar emphasised safeguarding elections from cyber threats and misinformation. Under his leadership, ECI introduced measures to enhance transparency in political finances and launched a web portal to streamline financial disclosures by political parties. - Delimitation in Assam:
Shri Kumar oversaw the complex task of delimiting Parliamentary and Assembly constituencies in Assam, fostering consensus among diverse stakeholders and ensuring an inclusive approach to redefining electoral boundaries. - Fight against electoral malpractices:
His tenure focused on curbing the misuse of money in elections, resulting in seizures worth over Rs 3,400 crore—nearly ten times higher than in previous elections across 11 states. - International collaboration:
As part of the 'Democracy Cohort on Election Integrity,' Shri Kumar led ECI’s international efforts, hosting three major conferences between October 2022 and March 2023. - Addressing urban apathy:
