Indian Railways has decided to double the compensation it pays to passengers or their kin if they meet with an accident during a train journey.

Family of a passenger who dies in a train accident will receive Rs 8 lakh from the previous sum of Rs 4 lakh.  Passengers facing serious injuries will be given Rs 8 lakh.

Passengers facing other injuries like shoulder injury, loss of thumb will now receive Rs 7.20 lakh and Rs 2.40 lakh respectively.

The Bombay High Court asked the Indian Railways for increasing the compensation for passengers facing financial losses in train accident.

Financial compensation for 41 injuries are carried by the Railways Claim Tribunal, and these reimbursement will be paid over and above the compensation of a maximum Rs 10 lakh to the families opting for insurance cover for train travel effective from January 1, 2017.

Last year, a petition was brought into notice in Delhi High Court stated that the Railways have not increased compensation since 1994. Following which the court had also asked the Railways regulatory in this regard.
