Railway ticket booking: Revised flexi-fares from March 15, 2019; advance booking begins

Indian Railways revised flexi-fares for the premium trains such as Rajdhani, Duronto and Shatabdi will be applicable from March 15, 2019. Advance ticket bookings have commenced as the changes required in the software have been executed.
Flexi-fare was introduced with the aim to provide relief to the passengers and also offering convenience and competitive fares to passengers, generating revenue for the Indian Railways.
October this year, Railway scrapped flexi-fare for 15 trains in which there were less than 50 percent occupancy rate thoughout the year. This scheme was introduced for 44 Rajdhanis, 46 Shatabdis and 52 Duronto trains in September 2016. It drew criticism from various quarters, including passengers and the CAG. Undder this scheme, when occupancy rates go up tariff too goes up. The fare go up by 10 percent as every 10 percent of berths are occupied.

Flexi-fare was completely for trains include Kalka-New Delhi, New Delhi-Ludhiana and Dibrugarh-Guwahati Shatabdis. Flexi-fares from 32 trains were also removed during February, March and August, considered to be the lean period.
The current base fare cap of 1.5 times to be reduced to 1.4 times the tariff in all classes. In last financial year, Railways earned about Rs 800 crore from flexi-fares.
