Union Minister Pralhad Joshi on Tuesday said that quality is not only a responsibility but also a strong competitive advantage for India. He stressed that high standards help protect consumers, improve business ease, and make Indian products trusted across the world.
The minister was speaking at the 79th Foundation Day celebration of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). He pointed the important role played by standards in building trust, improving governance, and supporting India’s vision of Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
Joshi said that quality standards act as benchmarks for excellence. They help Indian products compete not just in domestic markets but also at the global level. According to him, when products follow strong standards, consumers feel safe and businesses grow faster.
The Union Minister said that BIS has a major responsibility in ensuring quality across sectors. Through the formulation and strict implementation of quality standards, BIS not only secures the consumers but also assures the manufacturers and exporters of their market existence.
He explained that the introduction of quality systems has made business processes easier, more trustworthy, and more open. This is in line with the government’s policy of making business operations in India less of a hassle.
Joshi further stated that BIS also plays a role in the encouragement of innovation and in the companies of India’s being able to compete in terms of quality with the global players.
Recalling Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, Joshi said that the Prime Minister has always focused on quality in governance, service delivery, and manufacturing.
He said the Prime Minister has given a clear message that products labelled “Made in India” should automatically mean high quality and global trust. The goal, Joshi noted, is to make Indian products respected and accepted worldwide.
The minister said quality should not be seen as an extra effort, but as a basic part of every product and service.
Joshi also reiterated the government’s commitment to the vision of “Zero Defect, Zero Effect”. This vision focuses on producing goods that are high in quality while causing minimal harm to the environment.
He said achieving this goal needs teamwork. Policymakers, industries, standards bodies, and manufacturers must work together to raise quality levels.
The minister added that the larger aim is to transform “Made in India” into “Trusted by India” and “Trusted by the World.” He said BIS will continue to play a crucial role in this journey by strengthening standards and building confidence in Indian products globally.
