President Droupadi Murmu gave out the National Awards for empowering persons with disabilities on Wednesday, to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
While addressing the event, the President said that people with disabilities, also called Divyangjan, deserve equality.
She added that it is everyone’s duty to make sure persons with disabilities can equally take part in the country’s and society’s development, and this should not be seen as charity.
According to her, a society can be called developed only when people with disabilities have equal participation in all sectors.
She highlighted this year’s theme, “Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress,” and described it as a timely and positive message.
She expressed happiness that India is now taking a rights-based and dignity-centered approach for persons with disabilities, moving beyond only welfare.
She further mentioned that the participation of Divyangjan is key to India’s development.
She said, “Calling them ‘Divyangjan’ since 2015 reflects the nation’s respect for people with disabilities.”
The President further mentioned that the government is improving the environment for including and empowering persons with disabilities.
She said, “National-level centers have been established for sign language studies, mental health rehabilitation, and training in sports.”
She said that Unique Disability ID cards have been given to millions of Divyangjan, helping them access government facilities more easily.
She highlighted that supporting the rights and dignity of Divyangjan is a responsibility shared by both the government and society, according to IANS.
She said, “Working together will speed up progress. Every citizen should promise to respect the dignity, independence, and equal opportunities of persons with disabilities and include them in the country’s growth.”
Celebrated each year on December 3, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities is a UN effort to support the rights and well-being of people with disabilities.
The day also aims to increase awareness and encourage support for a more inclusive, accessible, and barrier-free society.
