PM Modi-Trump G7 Summit Meeting Today: Trade deal, H-1B, West Asia likely on agenda

A key meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump was delayed on Wednesday due to a working session meeting at the G7 Summit, according to sources. The bilateral meeting is set to take place on the sidelines of the 2026 G7 Summit in France, which ends later in the day.

According to sources, the two leaders are expected to discuss a range of bilateral and global issues, including the India-US trade pact, H-1B visas, Indo-Pacific cooperation and energy security.

The meeting -- their first face-to-face interaction in more than a year -- comes at a time when global markets are closely tracking developments in West Asia following a US-Iran peace deal breakthrough confirmed by both sides earlier this week.

Investors and policymakers will keep an eye out for clarity on easing disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz -- a key route for global oil and gas supplies that enabled the supply of 20 per cent of the world's supplies before the conflict. Crude oil prices have hit over three-month lows since the news of truce.

Earlier on Wednesday, Trump reportedly reiterated a previous claim that Iran had agreed to never acquire a nuclear weapon, while dismissing reports that the United States would provide Iran with a $300 billion reconstruction package under the peace deal. According to foreign media reports, Trump described such reports as "fake news". This week, US Vice President JD Vance had suggested that a reconstruction fund could be made available if Tehran fulfilled its obligations under a future agreement.

Trump has repeatedly justified military attacks on Iran by arguing that the Middle Eastern country was close to developing a nuclear weapon, whereas Tehran has consistently denied seeking nuclear weapons and maintains that its nuclear ambitions is for peaceful purposes.

What is on the G7 agenda today?

The final day of the G7 Summit is expected to focus on strengthening global partnerships and rebuilding international solidarity among member economies.

Wednesday's discussions are expected to cover global cooperation, geopolitical stability and key international challenges.

The situation in West Asia and its implications for global stability continue to be among the major issues under discussion at the event.

The day's proceedings are scheduled to conclude with a dinner hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron for heads of delegation and their spouses.

PM Modi's engagements in France

PM Modi is currently on a multi-city visit to France as part of his Europe tour.

Earlier this week, he held a bilateral meeting with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer on the sidelines of the summit. The two leaders reviewed progress across trade and economic cooperation, defence and security, climate action, technology and education under the 2035 India-UK Vision framework.

They exchanged ideas on regional and global developments, including the situation in West Asia and Ukraine. They also reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
