PM Modi flags off four Vande Bharat Express trains from Varanasi: Check new routes and travel time cuts

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday, November 8, flagged off four new Vande Bharat Express trains from Banaras Railway Station, marking a major step forward in India’s efforts to modernise its rail infrastructure and improve high-speed connectivity across the country.

Four new routes to improve connectivity and reduce travel time

In a significant expansion of the Vande Bharat network, the new trains will operate on the Banaras–Khajuraho, Lucknow–Saharanpur, Firozpur–Delhi, and Ernakulam–Bengaluru routes. Designed to enhance comfort and significantly cut travel time, the new services are expected to improve regional mobility, promote tourism, and stimulate local economic activity.

During the launch event, PM Modi emphasised the government’s continued commitment to developing world-class rail services for passengers. The Vande Bharat series, equipped with advanced safety and comfort features, represents India’s growing self-reliance in high-speed rail technology.

At the Ernakulam–Bengaluru train inauguration, Union Minister and BJP MP Suresh Gopi interacted with children on board and distributed chocolates, marking the launch in a festive atmosphere.

Banaras–Khajuraho: Linking heritage and faith

The Banaras–Khajuraho Vande Bharat Express connects major cultural and religious destinations such as Varanasi, Prayagraj, Chitrakoot, and Khajuraho. The train will save approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes compared to current services, offering faster and more comfortable travel for pilgrims and tourists.

Officials said the route will play a key role in promoting spiritual and heritage tourism, especially to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Khajuraho, and will provide a convenient link between sacred and historical centres in central India.

Lucknow–Saharanpur: Strengthening Uttar Pradesh’s intercity network

The Lucknow–Saharanpur Vande Bharat Express will complete its journey in 7 hours and 45 minutes, nearly an hour faster than existing trains. The service will benefit passengers from Sitapur, Shahjahanpur, Bareilly, Moradabad, Bijnor, and Saharanpur, offering seamless intercity connectivity across the heart of Uttar Pradesh.

It will also improve access to Haridwar via Roorkee, aiding religious tourism and trade between central and western Uttar Pradesh. Officials said the train will ease congestion on traditional routes while ensuring faster travel for daily commuters and business travellers alike.

Firozpur–Delhi: Fastest link between Punjab and the capital

The Firozpur–Delhi Vande Bharat Express is now the fastest train on the route, completing the journey in 6 hours and 40 minutes. Connecting Firozpur, Bathinda, and Patiala directly with the national capital, the train is expected to boost commerce, tourism, and employment opportunities in Punjab’s border districts.

Officials said the high-speed service will support economic growth by improving the movement of people and goods, while offering a modern alternative to conventional long-distance trains.

Ernakulam–Bengaluru: Boost for South India’s mobility corridor

In southern India, the Ernakulam–Bengaluru Vande Bharat Express will cut travel time by more than 2 hours, completing the trip in 8 hours and 40 minutes. The train links major IT and industrial hubs, offering a faster and more comfortable option for professionals, students, and tourists.

By connecting Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka, the new service is expected to strengthen business cooperation and promote tourism across southern India. Railway officials said the route aligns with the government’s broader push for improved inter-state transport infrastructure and regional development.

Before leaving for Darbhanga in Bihar, PM Modi interacted with schoolchildren and addressed a public gathering at Banaras Railway Station. Following the event, he proceeded to Babatpur Airport by helicopter.

Varanasi was decked up for the occasion, with decorative lighting and floral arrangements at key points, including Sant Atulanand Bypass, JP Mehta crossing, BLW FCI godown, and BLW gate. The city witnessed enthusiastic crowds lining the route to greet the Prime Minister.

Tight security and crowd management

To ensure smooth proceedings, a three-tier security system was implemented across Varanasi. Police Commissioner Mohit Agarwal confirmed that the city was declared a no-flying zone during the event, with CCTV and drone surveillance in place for real-time monitoring.

All officers deployed along the Prime Minister’s route were required to carry identification cards, while vehicle movement was restricted. Rooftop security was arranged, and entry to the event venue was allowed only after stringent security checks.

Separate frisking zones for women, managed by female police personnel, were set up to facilitate orderly entry. Officers were also equipped with loudhailers and public address systems to ensure clear communication and efficient crowd management.
