In addition to these, excise tax by central government and VAT by state governments add fuel to the fire.
The price of fuel has skyrocketed in the domestic market and is at an all-time high prompting the opposition parties to demand reduction in its prices. The Opposition had also called one day Bharat Bandh on September 10 demanding cut in petrol and diesel prices.
However, the government has repeatedly denied any cut in the central tax imposed on oil. Some state government like Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal have reduced VAT on the fuel prices making the oil cheaper by around Rs 2 per litre.
