NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam’s term extended

BVR Subrahmanyam’s extended term will now continue for a year beyond February 24 or until further orders, whichever is earlier, according to an official communication by the Secretariat of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet under the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions.

The central government on Monday extended NITI Aayog Chief Executive Officer (CEO) BVR Subrahmanyam’s term by a year. His current term was originally set to end on February 24. His extended term will now continue for a year beyond February 24 or until further orders, whichever is earlier, according to an official communication by the Secretariat of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet under the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions.

Subrahmanyam joined the CEO of NITI Aayog—the government's top policy think-tank—on February 25, 2023.

Subrahmanyam is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of batch 1987 (Chhattisgarh cadre).

Over the past three decades, Subrahmanyam has held several important assignments across Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Jammu & Kashmir (J&K).
Additionally, he has served a stint at the World Bank.

Subrahmanyam has been Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Chief Secretary in the Jammu & Kashmir government, and Principal Secretary in the Chhattisgarh government.

Over the years, he has held positions in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

What is NITI Aayog and what does it do?

NITI Aayog formulates long-term policies and plans for the Government of India.

Some of the key functions of the think-tahnk include evolving a shared national development vision, fostering cooperative federalism, and developing village-level plans.

The planning body also ensures national security interests are incorporated into economic policies, pays special attention to socially disadvantaged groups, and designs long-term policy frameworks.

It also promotes partnerships, knowledge sharing, and innovation, while monitoring and evaluating program implementation, and providing a platform for resolving inter-sectoral issues.
