The Monsoon Session of Parliament will run from July 21 to August 21, a period that may witness the introduction of several crucial bills. The Narendra Modi 3.0 government can present as many as 15 bills during this session, including eight new ones such as the Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2025, the Manipur Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2025, the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2025, and the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025, according to sources.
The session is set to have 21 sittings, with an adjournment from August 12 to August 18.
Also, seven pending bills are expected to be tabled during the session.
This year’s Monsoon Session assumes significance as it is the first since the Armed Forces’ retaliatory action--dubbed Operation Sindoor--targeting terrorist infrastructure across the border in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, J&K, that killed 26 civilians.
Recently, the Opposition--led by the Indian National Congress (INC)--demanded a special session of Parliament to discuss Operation Sindoor.
According to sources, the session may also see a special resolution to extend the period of President's Rule in Manipur by six months. President’s Rule was imposed in the northeastern state in February following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh amid prolonged violence and unrest.
The current term of President’s Rule in the state is set to expire on August 13. The initial term lasts six months and can be extended by six-month intervals for up to three years with Parliamentary approval.
Both Houses of Parliament--the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha--are scheduled to convene at 11 am on the opening day of the session, July 21.
Sources say that the session may see a slew of heated debates, particularly in light of the Opposition’s recent demand for an immediate special session.
