Mann Ki Baat: Mention of Chhattisgarh's blackbuck conservation efforts a matter of pride, says CM Vishnu Deo Sai

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's April edition of 'Mann Ki Baat', his monthly radio address to the nation, mentioned Chhattisgarh's efforts to conserve blackbucks. Describing it as a proud moment for Chhattisgarh, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said that repeated references to the state’s achievements on a national platform not only strengthen its identity but also boost the morale of its people. The Chhattisgarh CM listened to the 133rd episode of the radio feature with a large gathering at Vinayak City in Bhatagaon, Raipur.

'Mann Ki Baat' has today become a powerful medium connecting the masses of the country, through which innovations, public participation and outstanding grassroots efforts from across India receive national recognition, said the CM.

He also said that the prime minister communicates with citizens like a guardian, not only bringing forward inspiring stories but also motivating every section of society toward positive change. Through this dialogue, said the CM, the spirit of participation is strengthened and collective efforts towards nation-building receive renewed energy.

Sai also noted that the national-level recognition of Chhattisgarh’s efforts in blackbuck conservation reflects the state’s strong commitment to environmental protection and biodiversity. The state, he said, is emerging as an inspiring model for other states as well.

Blackbucks have started to reappear in Chhattisgarh: PM Modi in Mann Ki Baat

During the radio show, aired on April 26, the prime minister praised the reappearance of blackbucks in Chhattisgarh, noting the continued efforts that led to increased conservation. Earlier, their numbers had dwindled significantly, said the PM.

"Today, they are once again seen roaming the open fields. This marks the return of our lost heritage. Similar hope is visible in the conservation of the Great Indian Bustard, the Godavan. This bird used to be a hallmark of our desert regions. However, at one point, its numbers had dwindled to a trickle. The situation was such that this bird was on the verge of extinction. But now a major campaign is underway for its conservation," said PM Modi.

He also said that the adoption of scientific methods and the establishment of breeding centers has revived the lives of these animals.

"Nature and humans are not separate. We are each other's partners. When we understand nature, respect it, and live in harmony with it, change is clearly visible. Today, this change is emerging as new hope from every nook and corner of the country," noted the PM.

Placement of bamboo in special category

The state's CM said that the removal of bamboo from the tree category and its placement in a special category has significantly enhanced its usage, leading to a boost to incomes, especially for women. Referring to the PM’s emphasis on the need and potential of wind energy, Sai said Chhattisgarh is making consistent and concrete strides in this direction, which will promote energy self-reliance going forward.

In Mann Ki Baat, the PM stated that bamboo was defined as a tree according to the law made by the British. The rules associated with it were very strict, he said.

"It was very difficult to transport bamboo anywhere. As a result, people here started moving away from bamboo-related businesses... By changing the law in 2017, we removed bamboo from the tree category. The results of which are visible to everyone. Today, the bamboo sector is flourishing throughout the Northeast. People are continuously innovating and adding value to it," said the PM.

During the programme, Chief Minister Sai also took a unique initiative by sharing traditional Chhattisgarhi dishes brought from home with the attendees and dining together. He said such events strengthen trust, warmth and unity within society.

Assembly Speaker Dr Raman Singh, Forest Minister Kedar Kashyap, MLAs Purandar Mishra and Sampat Agrawal, Chhattisgarh Film Development Corporation Chairperson Mona Sen, Ajay Jamwal, Akhilesh Soni, Ramesh Thakur, and several other public representatives and dignitaries were present at the event.
