In a major relief for vehicle owners, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has simplified the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process for FASTag users to make it more convenient. Now, users will only need to upload the front photo of their vehicle—showing the number plate and FASTag—and the system will automatically fetch the registration certificate (RC) details from the government’s Vahan portal.
According to the revised guidelines issued by the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), FASTag services will not be discontinued for non-compliant vehicles immediately. Instead, users will be given enough time to complete their KYV formalities.
If multiple vehicles are registered against a single mobile number, the user will be able to select the vehicle for which they wish to complete KYV, according to the press release.

The guidelines also direct issuer banks to assist customers facing difficulties while uploading documents. If a user encounters any issue, the bank must proactively reach out and help them complete the KYV process before disconnection. Customers can also contact the National Highway Helpline Number 1033 for KYV-related support.
FASTags issued before the KYV policy will remain active unless complaints are received regarding loose tags or misuse. Issuer banks will continue to send SMS reminders to encourage users to finish the process.
“The simplification of the KYV rules is a part of NHAI’s commitment to enhance user experience, strengthen the FASTag ecosystem and provide a smooth and seamless experience to National Highway users across the country,” the press release added.
In a separate move, the government recently amended the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008, introducing differential toll charges for non-FASTag users. Starting November 15, vehicles without a valid FASTag will be allowed to pay 1.25 times the regular toll fee if they use UPI for payment. Those paying in cash will continue to be charged double the user fee.
“In a significant step to incentivise digital payments and eliminate cash transactions at the user fee plazas on National Highways for Non-FASTag users, the Government of India has amended National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008. Under the new rule, vehicles entering a fee plaza without a valid, functional FASTag will be charged twice the applicable user fee if the fee payment is made in cash,” the Ministry said in a statement.
