<p>The discussion comes shortly after US President Donald Trump, during Diwali celebrations at the Oval Office, said he had spoken with Prime Minister Narendra Modi about India’s oil imports from Russia. “I spoke to Prime Minister Modi today and we just have a very good relationship. He’s not going to buy much oil from Russia. He wants to see that war end as much as I do. He wants to see the war between Russia and Ukraine end. They’ve cut it way back and are continuing to cut it way back,” the US President said.</p>
<p>While Prime Minister Modi later acknowledged the call with the President, his official statement made no reference to discussions on oil imports.</p>
<h2><strong>Washington claims India cutting Russian oil purchases</strong></h2>
<p>Earlier this month, during a bilateral lunch with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House, President Trump claimed that India had “significantly reduced” its imports of Russian oil and was “now pulling back entirely”. He suggested that New Delhi “will not be buying oil from Russia anymore.”</p>
<p>These remarks follow Washington’s continued push to isolate Russian energy exports since the Ukraine conflict began, even as India has maintained that its energy sourcing is determined by national needs and consumer protection.</p>
<h2><strong>India reiterates independent energy policy</strong></h2>
<p>Responding to the US President’s comments, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reiterated on October 16 that India’s import decisions are guided by its national interest and the need to ensure affordable, reliable supplies for its citizens.</p>
<p>“India is a significant importer of oil and gas. It has been our consistent priority to safeguard the interests of the Indian consumer in a volatile energy scenario,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.</p>
<p>“Our import policies are guided entirely by this objective. Ensuring stable energy prices and secured supplies have been the twin goals of our energy policy. This includes broad-basing our energy sourcing and diversifying as appropriate to meet market conditions,” he added.</p>
<h2><strong>Energy partnership continues to expand</strong></h2>
<p>The MEA further noted that India has been steadily expanding energy procurement from the United States over the past decade.</p>
<p>“Where the US is concerned, we have for many years sought to expand our energy procurement. This has steadily progressed in the last decade. The current Administration has shown interest in deepening energy cooperation with India. Discussions are ongoing,” Jaiswal said.</p>
