India and the United States have wrapped up the inaugural meeting of the Drug Policy Executive Working Group in Washington DC, reaffirming their shared resolve to tackle the growing threat of synthetic opioids, emerging precursor chemicals and the misuse of digital platforms, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Thursday.
The meeting was held from January 20 to 22 and marked a key step in institutionalising counter-narcotics cooperation between the two countries. Both sides underlined the need to strike a balance between strict enforcement measures and the smooth facilitation of legitimate trade.
“India and the US held the Inaugural Drug Policy Executive Working Group meeting in Washington DC (20–22 Jan 2026). Both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to countering synthetic opioids, novel precursors and misuse of digital platforms, while balancing effective enforcement with facilitation of legitimate trade,” the MEA posted on X.

India’s Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, delivered the opening remarks at the meeting, where officials reviewed progress made so far and discussed ways to strengthen bilateral efforts against illicit drug trafficking and the diversion of precursor chemicals.

<h2>US praises India’s role in global drug crackdown</h2>
In July last year, the US Embassy in India had acknowledged India’s role in curbing illegal drug networks, thanking the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and Indian authorities for their cooperation. In a post on X, the US Embassy in India had stated, “Thanks to NCB and Indian authorities for helping protect Americans against illegal drugs and saving American lives!”
The post came after Union Home Minister Amit Shah highlighted the dismantling of a global drug cartel, crediting coordinated action by Indian agencies. He noted that traffickers were increasingly using advanced tools such as cryptocurrency payments and anonymous drop-shipping networks.
“Congratulations to NCB and all agencies on busting a global drug cartel. The probe set a stellar example of multi-agency coordination, resulting in 8 arrests and seizures of 5 consignments while triggering crackdowns in the US and Australia against the ring that operates across 4 continents and 10+ nations,” Shah said in his post.

“Our agencies are constantly monitoring the sophisticated modes like crypto payments and anonymous drop shippers used by these gangs. PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji led govt is determined to saw off every drug cartel and protect our youth, no matter where they operate from,” he added.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the NCB and its Headquarters Operations Unit recently busted a transnational drug trafficking syndicate that relied on encrypted digital platforms, cryptocurrency transactions and drop-shipping models to move controlled medicines across continents. What began as a routine vehicle interception near Bengali Market in New Delhi eventually exposed a sprawling international network operating across India, the US, Australia and Europe, spanning four continents and over 10 countries.
