He was speaking at the India Maritime Week, an annual event organised in Mumbai that is set to see the participation of 100 countries, 350 speakers, more 500 companies, and more than a lakh delegates.

Home Minister Amit Shah said on Monday that India's maritime history dates back 5,000 years and the country aims to be among the world's top five shipbuilding nations. Speaking at the fourth edition of the annual event, organised in Mumbai from October 27 to 31, Shah said that the about 90 per cent of the country's trade takes place through sea routes. He also said that the event will host discussions on transforming Mumbai’s Gateway of India into the ‘Gateway of the World’.

The 2025 leg of the annual maritime event is expected to see the participation of 100 countries, 350 speakers, over 500 companies, and more than a lakh delegates. The event will also see the participation of sevetal global maritime industry majors, international organisations, and policy think-tanks.

"From a budget of $40 million, we have now reached $230 million... Coastal shipping has grown by 118 per cent over the past decade, with a 150 per cent rise in cargo handling," said Shah, who inaugurated the event.

India Maritime Week: 4th edition organised in Mumbai from October 27 to 31

The five-day event, organised at NESCO Grounds in Mumbai, is hosted by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW). The event is set to be the largest maritime gathering globally, bringing together key stakeholders from across the maritime ecosystem.

The theme of the 2025 edition of the week is 'Uniting Oceans, One Maritime Vision'.

The event will showcase the country's strategic vision to emerge as a global maritime hub and a leader in the Blue Economy. Ministers from 11 countries along with their industry delegations are scheduled to participate in various sessions throughout the India Maritime Week.

“India Maritime Week is more than an event, it will position India as a global maritime hub, promote green and sustainable shipping, and enhance international maritime trade and connectivity," said Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

PM Narendra Modi to address event on October 29

Prime Minister Narendra is scheduled to address the nation, global maritime leaders and stakeholders at a special plenary session hosted in the India Maritime Week on the evening of October 29. PM Modi will also chair a high-level global CEO forum with selected international CEOs from leading maritime companies across the globe.

The 2025 edition of the annual event is set to host more than 12 flagship events, including the 4th edition of Global Maritime India Summit (GMIS 2025), QUAD Ports of the Future Conference, Sagarmanthan – The Great Oceans Dialogue, SheEO Conference, the UNESCAP Asia-Pacific Dialogue and many more.

The Maritime India Vision 2030 identifies 10 pivotal themes that will shape the country's journey toward becoming a global maritime powerhouse.
