The Director General of Military Operations (DGMO)-level talks between India and Pakistan are expected to take place on Monday evening after a failed attempt to connect via hotline by 12:20 pm, amid the ongoing ceasefire understanding, sources said.
The interaction, originally scheduled around noon, is now set to take place at around 5:30 pm. The move comes as part of continued efforts to uphold the ceasefire understanding reached between the two sides.
The agreement followed three days of intense military hostilities that began on May 7, when India launched Operation Sindoor in response to the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22.
Earlier in the day, India’s top military leadership held a rare joint media briefing. DGMO Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai, DG Air Operations Air Marshal AK Bharti, and DG Naval Operations Vice Admiral AN Pramod addressed the press at 2:30 pm in New Delhi, asserting that all Indian military bases and systems remain fully operational and ready for any contingency.
Air Marshal AK Bharti highlighted the Indian Air Force’s success in intercepting and neutralising Pakistani drones and other aerial threats.
He credited India’s Integrated Air Defence and Air Command & Control systems, along with the indigenous Akash missile platform, for effectively shielding key installations. “Our fight was against terror infrastructure, but the Pakistan military chose to back terrorists, thereby widening the conflict,” he said.
Addressing the media on Sunday, DGMO Lt General Rajiv Ghai said his Pakistani counterpart had proposed halting hostilities during their interaction on May 11.
"My communication with the Pak DGMO was conducted at 15:35 hrs yesterday and resulted in cessation of cross-border firing and air intrusions by either side with effect from 17:00 hrs, May 10," he said. The two had agreed to speak again on May 12 at noon to discuss the modalities for sustaining peace, he added.
However, the ceasefire was short-lived. “Disappointingly, expectedly, it took only a couple of hours for the Pakistan Army to violate these arrangements through cross-border firing and drone intrusions,” Lt Gen Ghai said, adding that the violations were strongly responded to and flagged via a hotline message. He also mentioned that Army commanders have full authority to respond to any further aggression.
Operation Sindoor, launched in the early hours of May 7, targeted nine terror sites across Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied-Kashmir in retaliation for the deadly Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives last month. All subsequent Indian military actions, including retaliatory strikes and air defence operations, have been carried out under this mission.
Providing an update on ground realities, the Indian Army confirmed that the previous night remained “largely peaceful” across Jammu & Kashmir and along the International Border — a rare calm after several days of hostilities.
