India Energy Week 2025 Day 1: PM Narendra Modi mentions 5 pillars behind India’s energy ambitions, says next 2 decades crucial for Viksit Bharat goal

India kicked off the 2025 edition of its mega India Energy Week event on Tuesday, a annual event aimed at driving global energy innovation and collaboration for a sustainable future. In his keynote address at the much-anticipated event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India’s energy ambitions are standing on five pillars: resources, brilliant minds being encouraged to innovate, economic strength and political stability, strategic geography making energy trade more attractive and seamless, and its commitment to global sustainability.

Speaking through video conferencing, the Prime Minister said the next two decades are crucial for the country’s Viksit Bharat (developed India) goals, a period when it is prepared to cross several milestones. The PM said that many of India’s energy goals are aligned with the deadline of 2030, such as:

• Capacity addition of 500 gigawatts of renewable energy
• Net zero carbon emissions by Indian Railways
• 500 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen every year

“Our targets can look ambitious to many, but India’s achievements in the last 10 years create the confidence that these targets will also be achieved,” said PM Modi.

“Every global expert is saying that the 21^st century belongs to India... India is not only driving its own growth but also the world’s growth. Its energy sector has an important role to play in this journey,” said the PM.

Extending warm regards to all attendees, the Prime Minister said: “You are not just part of the India Energy Week event, but also a significant part of the country’s energy ambitions. I am confident that the India Energy Week will lead to solid solutions in this direction. I am hopoing that all of you will explore every developing possibility in India.”

India remains committed to offering the kind of energy solutions that energise its growth and enriching its nature, concluded the PM.

Speaking at the event, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said that the central government is leaving no stone unturned to take the share of gases in the country’s energy mix to 15 per cent from 6.0 per cent.

The Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas highlighted the country’s ever-evolving energy landscape, the importance of balancing key challenges with long-term ambitions, and the country’s commitment to achieving its energy gos under PM Modi’s leadership.

India, said the oil minister, is taking a strategic approach by leveraging its 7.6 billion tonnes of discovered upstream resources, 500 million tonnes of biofuel feedstock, and rising energy demand. Puri also underscored that nations and companies mastering this hybrid energy model would emerge as leaders in the next generation of energy superpowers.

What is IEW 2025?

Organised from February 11 to February 14 in the Yashobhoomi international convention and expo centre in Dwarka  in the national capital, the IEW 2025 event is set to record unparalleled global participation from ministers, CEOs and industry leaders in the country’s crucial energy space. Spanning more than one lakh square metres with a keen focus on innovation, the central government has said that IEW is set to be the second largest energy event across the globe, in terms of participation, exhibition space and sessions. 

The India Energy Week brings together global energy leaders, policymakers, industry experts, and innovators to shape the future of energy. Building upon the remarkable success of the previous two editions, as India's flagship energy event, IEW 2025 serves as a crucial platform for dialogue, investment, and technological advancements across the energy value chain.

With a strong focus on growth, collaboration, and transition, the event highlights India’s commitment to energy security, sustainability, and global partnerships.

From discussions on clean energy innovations to showcasing cutting-edge solutions in oil, gas, renewables, and hydrogen, IEW 2025 is set to drive meaningful collaborations and transformative policy actions that will define the next phase of the global energy landscape.

A key highlight of the 2025 edition of the India Energy Week will be the rollout of the Open Acreage Licensing Program (OALP) Bid Round-X, set to be the largest auction in terms of acreage offered in a single round since the inception of the programme. In this bid round 25 blocks, with an area of 1,91,986 sqquare kilometers are on offer to the investor community.

Here’s a summary of the features of the OALP Bid Round–X:

• 25 blocks spread over thirteen (13) Sedimentary Basins, covering an area of 1,91,986 square kilometers
• Out of total 25 blocks on offer, 16 blocks with an area of 97,919.6 Sq. Km. (51 per cent) fall in earlier ‘No-Go’ area
• Out of 25 Blocks, 6 Blocks are in Onland, 6 Blocks are in Shallow Water, 1 in Deep Water and 12 Blocks are in Ultra Deep-Water areas
• Spread over Category-I (9 Blocks), Category-II (11 Blocks) and Category-III (5 Blocks) Basins
• This bid round is primarily an offshore bid round with 19 offshore blocks covering an area of 1,75,115 sq.km.  13 blocks covering an area of 1,33,724 sq.km fall in deep water and ultradeep water
• Further, for OALP round X, a new e-bidding portal is available for transparent and secure bidding with additional ease of doing business features

Meomorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to Be Signed at IEW 2025

ONGC has selected British oil giant bp to act as the technical services provider (TSP) for the Mumbai High field, India’s largest and most prolific offshore oil field.

Technical major EIL is set to execute a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with BP Business Solutions India Pvt Ltd to collaborate on technical solutions across key energy domains during the IEW 2025 event.

Separate memorandums of understanding are also on the cards at the grand event, between Honeywell and AMGreen, and between Honeywell and NTPC.
