The Income Tax Department has released a public notice to warn taxpayers, especially the elderly ones, about the increase in fake emails, SMS messages, and websites under the Department’s name that are meant to steal personal and financial information.

The Department has asked taxpayers, through a post on X, to double-check the legitimacy of any communication that pretends to come from the tax authorities. It also informed that frauds are more and more using fake sender IDs, confusing links, and impersonation websites to deceive people into giving out their sensitive information like PAN numbers, passwords, and one-time passwords (OTPs).
Taxpayers have been reminded to access tax-related services only through the official portal, <a href="http://www.incometax.gov.in">www.incometax.gov.in</a>. Any other website resembling the official domain—including variations with “efiling” or altered spellings—should be treated as suspicious.

To strengthen awareness, the Department encouraged reporting of suspicious activity. Suspected phishing emails can be forwarded to <a href="mailto:webmanager@incometax.gov.in">webmanager@incometax.gov.in</a>, with a copy to <a href="mailto:incident@cert-in.org.in">incident@cert-in.org.in</a>, the national cyber incident response agency. For assistance, taxpayers may also contact the official helpline at 1800 103 0025 or 080 46122000.
The campaign forms part of the government’s broader push to promote cyber hygiene and protect citizens, particularly vulnerable groups such as senior citizens, from digital fraud. The Department urged people to share the advisory widely to safeguard family members and loved ones.
