Heatwave conditions are expected to persist for the next three days over Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heat wave alert and also indicated that the intense heat is likely to gradually extend towards East India and adjoining parts of Central India during this period.
Through an X (formerly Twitter) post, IMD has advised residents to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, and take necessary precautions.

Similar conditions were reported in isolated pockets of interior Odisha, Rayalaseema, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, and Gujarat. In most other regions of the country, temperatures remained between 36°C and 40°C, except parts of the western Himalayan region and Northeast India, where temperatures stayed below 36°C.
The highest maximum temperature was recorded in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, at 44.4°C, as per IMD’s release.
The weather agency also noted that temperatures were markedly above normal in parts of Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh. They were appreciably above normal in several areas, including Jharkhand, East Uttar Pradesh, Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, and Kerala, among others. Above-normal temperatures were also observed in parts of Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and other regions, while near-normal conditions prevailed over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Gujarat, coastal Karnataka, and Lakshadweep.
<h2>Himachal Pradesh weather update</h2>
Himachal Pradesh continued to witness largely clear weather conditions over the past 24 hours, with temperatures rising by around 2°C to 5°C in several regions. The highest temperature was recorded in Una at around 38.4°C, while Shimla registered 25.6°C. Areas including Shimla, Solan, and Kangra recorded temperatures about 3°C to 5°C above normal daytime levels.
Despite the rise in temperatures, no heatwave conditions have been reported anywhere in the state so far.
The IMD has forecast clear weather across Himachal Pradesh until April 23. During this period, daytime temperatures are expected to rise further by 2°C to 4°C in many areas. A change in weather is likely from April 24, when light rain may occur in isolated pockets, especially in Chamba and adjoining higher regions.
On April 25, more active weather conditions are expected, with light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms likely in Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, and Shimla districts. From April 26 onwards, weather activity is expected to reduce again, although intermittent cloud cover and isolated rainfall may continue in mid-hill districts such as Mandi.
The IMD further stated that temperatures in the state are expected to remain close to normal over the next three days despite recent increases. In several areas including Shimla, Solan, and Kangra, temperatures have already been recorded about 3°C to 5°C above normal. For example, Una recorded around 31.6°C, which is approximately 4°C above the seasonal average, while Shimla also reported temperatures nearly 4°C above normal.
Overall, temperatures across Himachal Pradesh are expected to stabilise around normal levels by April 24, even as intermittent weather activity continues thereafter.

Meanwhile, different parts of the country are experiencing highly contrasting weather conditions, with heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, hailstorms, and intense heat all occurring simultaneously, according to IMD.
Very heavy rainfall between 12 cm and 20 cm was reported in isolated pockets of Assam, while Nagaland recorded heavy rainfall between 7 cm and 11 cm. Thunderstorms accompanied by squally winds of 50–80 kmph impacted Marathwada, Odisha, Madhya Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Arunachal Pradesh, and Assam &amp; Meghalaya. Gusty winds of 30–50 kmph were also observed across several parts of Northeast, East, North, Central, West, and South India.
Marathwada recorded wind speeds reaching up to 83 kmph. In addition, isolated hailstorms were reported from Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Telangana.
