IEW 2025 enters Day 2: Tech, innovation & energy transition in focus at world’s 2nd largest energy event
On Tuesday, India kicked off the grand event at the Yashobhoomi international convention and expo centre in Dwarka in the national capital, set to record unparalleled global participation from ministers, CEOs and industry leaders in the country’s crucial energy space.
The 2025 edition of the India Energy Week, a much-anticipated annual event aimed at driving global energy innovation and collaboration for a sustainable future, entered its second day on Wednesday, February 12. On Tuesday, India kicked off the grand event at the Yashobhoomi international convention and expo centre in Dwarka in the national capital, set to record unparalleled global participation from ministers, CEOs and industry leaders in the country’s crucial energy space.
Spanning more than one lakh square metres with a keen focus on innovation, the central government has said that IEW is set to be the second largest energy event across the globe, in terms of participation, exhibition space and sessions.
India Energy Week 2025 Exhibition: A premier global energy showcase
The 2025 edition of the IEW exhibition stands as an unparalleled platform for domestic and international energy businesses to network, showcase innovations, and explore transformative opportunities within the rapidly evolving energy sector. As the country’s economy surges forward, creating vast prospects across the global energy value chain, more than 700 leading companies are engaging with a dynamic audience of more than 70,000 delegates, fostering strategic collaborations, unveiling cutting-edge technologies, and exchanging insights that will shape the future of energy in India and beyond.
The event—organised form February 11 to February 14—is hosting 10 country pavilions, bringing together over 20 foreign energy ministers and deputy ministers, more than 90 CEOs and industry leaders from global Fortune 500 companies. Together, the stellar lineup of business leaders, special guests and attendees are reinforcing the country’s role as a pivotal hub for global energy dialogue and innovation.
During his inaugural speech on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said: India is driving not only its growth but also the growth of the world, with the energy sector playing a significant role.”
PM Modi emphasised that India’s energy ambitions are built on five pillars: harnessing resources, encouraging innovation among brilliant minds, economic strength and political stability, strategic geography making energy trade attractive and easier, and commitment to global sustainability.
Innovation Takes Centre Stage at IEW 2025
The 2025 edition of the India Energy Week showcases a few groundbreaking advancements in the energy sector. Here’s a summary of these pivotal milestones:
Hydrogen burner for cooking application: With an aim to achieve the goal of ultimate clean cooking fuel, hydrogen burner has been developed indigenously by IIT Bombay. It is a single cooktop burner compatible with 100 per cent H2.
Membrane less electrolyser for green H2 production: Membrane-less alkaline water electrolyser system for green hydrogen production has been developed by M/s Newtrace, Bangalore. This indigenous technology replaces critical components such as membranes and rare-earth metals currently used in commercial electrolyser.
Solar wind energy-powered net zero retail outlet: A pilot project towards harnessing the potential of renewable energy for Retail Outlet (RO) operation is being carried out at BP Asalwas RO located NH8 Delhi- Jaipur highway. Typically, the said pilot taps vehicular movement on national highway using vertical-axis wind turbines in combination with horizontal axis wind turbine and Solar cell with a battery storage facility to tap renewable power up to 56-kW for DG free RO operation while reducing grid dependency.
Cost effective, low-energy consuming, and modular CCU technology: M/s UrjanovaC, a start-up from IIT-Bombay, for Carbon Capture and Utilization developed innovative technology which offers a dual solution for CO₂ capture and its simultaneous conversion into calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) using water as a medium under ambient conditions. The plant utilizes an innovative approach, incorporating M/s UrjanovaC’s patented catalytic technology for CO₂ capture and utilization, using waste resources generated at the plant site. This is an aqua-based technology that achieves 10-15% higher CO2 capture efficiency compared to traditional amine-based solutions and eliminates the need for CO2 storage and compression, and hazardous amine handling while offering a sustainable waste-to-wealth solution by converting CO2 into valuable Calcium carbonate.
Clean Cooking Ministerial: India Leads the Global Drive for Universal Clean Cooking Access
Empowering lives, protecting the planet: India took centre stage in advancing global clean cooking access by hosting the Clean Cooking Ministerial on February 12, 2025, during India Energy Week (IEW). With participation from energy ministers and deputy ministers from across Africa and Asia, the ministerial underscored the urgent need for global collaboration to achieve universal access to clean cooking solutions, improving health, gender equality, and environmental sustainability worldwide.
At the center of the country’s leadership in this movement is the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), a groundbreaking initiative that has empowered over 10.3 crore families with LPG connections, facilitating over 13 lakh refills daily.
With the Ujjwala scheme, beneficiaries have receive a cylinder for Rs 500, making a family's daily cooking cost just over Rs 5 (around 7 US cents).
Milestone Agreements
India has secured volume of crude oil and LNG for growing its oil and gas demand. Here are a few important agreements set to be signed at the mega energy event:
- BPCL’s Crude term deal with Petrobras: One more step towards India’s energy security and diversifying its crude sources, India’s BPCL signed an Optional term contract with Brazil’s Petrobras for import of 6 million barrels of Brazilian crude grades.
- IOCL & ADNOC: IOCL and ADNOC signed sale and purchase agreement for sourcing of long term LNG upto 1.2 MMTPA from 2026 onwards for 14 years. The contract is valued over $7 billion (Rs 60,000 crore).
- BPCL & ADNOC: BPCL and ADNOC signed a term LNG offtake agreement for 2.5 MMT spread over 5 years starting from April 2025, expandable by another 5 years with mutual consent.
