How rich is Rakesh Jhunjhunwala? Well, the big bull's net worth came in at $3 billion (about Rs 19,552 crore) in March 2018, according to Forbes data. This is a jump of over Rs 13,000 crore from $1 billion (about Rs 6,517 crore) quoted in March 2008. India's own Warren Buffett, as Jhunjhunwala is popularly known, added Rs 1,300 crore between two lists of Forbes - the current one and the one released in October 2017. His net worth stood at $2.8 billion (about Rs 18,167 crore) in the October list.
An investor with a Midas touch, he is known for his value investing and long-term approach to the stock market. His fame is such that investors often lap up the companies whose shares he picks. And he is an aggressive investor, willing to take on leverage (debt) to fund his purchases.
A self-made billionaire investor, market guru Jhunjhunwala is a certified Chartered Accountant. Son of an income tax officer, he started tracking stocks while he was just 12 or 13 years old. He began investing with just Rs 5000 in 1985 when Sensex, BSE's benchmark index, quoted at 150. On January 29, 2018, Sensex hit an all-time high of 36,374.87.
Jhunjhunwala actively manages his wife Rekha Jhunjhunwala's portfolio too. Its value surged 47 per cent to Rs 2814 crore from Rs 1,909 crore on March 8, 2017.
However, Rekha Jhunjhunwala's portfolio incurred losses on three companies. Viceroy Hotel tanked 25 per cent, while Bilcare and CRISIL slipped 6 per cent and 3 per cent, respectively since March 8, 2017.
