Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Saturday flagged off 20 electric taxis from the state secretariat in Shimla under the Rajiv Gandhi Swarozgaar Start-up Yojana (RGSSY), a key initiative aimed at promoting self-employment and green mobility.
Under the scheme, the state government is offering a 50 per cent subsidy to young entrepreneurs for purchasing e-taxis. So far, Rs 4.22 crore has been disbursed to 59 beneficiaries, and subsidies for 61 more are expected to be released soon, officials said, ANI reported.

Steady income and reduced state burden
The chief minister said the initiative is designed to provide sustainable employment to youth and assured income for five years by attaching the taxis to government offices, with an option for a two-year extension. Sukhu said this would also help reduce the financial burden on the state.
Highlighting the state’s focus on environmental protection, the chief minister stressed the importance of adopting e-vehicles and green hydrogen to tackle the growing impact of climate change.
“We are witnessing the adverse effects of climate change. It’s vital we implement policies that support environmental conservation. Promotion of e-vehicles is the need of the hour,” Sukhu said.
Jobs, training and reforms in focus
He added that the state is not only offering government jobs but is actively creating avenues for self-employment. He also announced that the Himachal Pradesh State Electronics Development Corporation (HPSEDC) has secured a license to operate as a recruiting agency.
“The hardest part was getting the HPSEDC license. Now, we will sign MoUs with consulates of various countries and offer skill training to our youth,” he said.
The chief minister also highlighted administrative reforms across departments, noting that Himachal has improved its national ranking in education from 21st to 5th. He further said efforts are underway to equip government medical colleges with healthcare facilities on par with AIIMS, Delhi. "These initiatives reflect our commitment to improving the lives of people across Himachal Pradesh,” Sukhu said.
