Tamil Nadu is set for another spell of active weather later this week as a developing low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is expected to trigger heavy rainfall across several districts on January 9 and 10, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The system, which has formed from an intensified atmospheric circulation over the southern Bay of Bengal, is likely to strengthen further in the next 24 hours, raising the risk of intense rain, waterlogging and local disruptions, especially in delta and northern coastal regions.
Weather officials said the evolving system could bring prolonged spells of rain rather than short showers, prompting authorities to advise residents, farmers and local administrations to remain alert as conditions are expected to change rapidly over the coming days.
In its latest bulletin, the IMD said an atmospheric circulation over the central parts of the southern Bay of Bengal has consolidated into a low-pressure area. The system is expected to intensify into a deep low-pressure area within the next day, increasing the likelihood of widespread rainfall across Tamil Nadu and neighbouring regions.
Meteorologists noted that such systems during this period can lead to persistent rain bands, particularly affecting low-lying and delta districts.
According to the forecast, heavy rainfall is likely over Tamil Nadu’s delta districts on January 9. Areas expected to be most affected include Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Pudukottai and Ramanathapuram.
These districts may see intense rain spells that could lead to waterlogging in urban pockets, slower road traffic and temporary disruptions to farming activities, particularly in paddy-growing regions.
On January 10, the impact of the system is expected to spread further north. Heavy rain is likely over Viluppuram and Cuddalore, in addition to Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Thanjavur.
The IMD said both coastal and interior districts could experience sustained rainfall as the weather system continues to draw moisture from the Bay of Bengal.
Even ahead of the peak rainfall days, moderate rain is likely at isolated places across coastal Tamil Nadu. The IMD has also warned of light fog during early morning hours on Tuesday and Wednesday over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, which could affect visibility for road and rail users.
In contrast, colder conditions are expected in the hills. Frost warnings have been issued for isolated locations in the Nilgiris and Kodaikanal, where night temperatures may dip sharply during the early morning hours.
The IMD has urged district administrations to stay prepared and closely monitor the evolving weather situation. Farmers have been advised to take precautions to protect standing crops, while residents in flood-prone areas are asked to remain cautious.
Fishermen have also been warned to stay alert, as sea conditions may become rough as the low-pressure system strengthens over the Bay of Bengal.
