The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heavy rainfall alerts for several states till June 30. This includes parts of western, central, eastern, and southern India.
A look at state-wise weather alerts
Gujarat
Officials ordered to close schools in Surat, Gujarat, after heavy rains caused significant waterlogging in several areas of the city. Normal life was significantly disrupted as low-lying regions were inundated.
Maharashtra
Maharashtra also saw heavy rains, causing the Godavari River to overflow and flood areas of Nashik. Rescue crews were on high alert as residents fought to wade through knee-deep water.
Kerala
As severe rain battered portions of Kerala in the south, local officials began keeping an eye out for additional risks associated with the rainfall. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Kerala and Karnataka during 24th to 28th June.
Tamil Nadu
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has predicted light to moderate rainfall in isolated parts of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, with eight districts expected to receive showers.
The forecast also includes possible thunder, lightning, and strong winds in some areas due to a change in the westerly wind pattern.
According to RMC officials, the districts likely to witness rainfall include the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Theni, Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, and Dindigul. These areas, particularly those located in the Western Ghats and the southern tip of the state, are more susceptible to moisture-laden winds during the southwest monsoon season.
Orange, yellow alerts issued for Himachal districts
The Regional Meteorological Centre of Shimla has issued orange and yellow alerts for several districts of Himachal Pradesh for June 25, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of the state.
An orange alert has been issued for the districts of Sirmaur, Una, Bilaspur, Mandi, Hamirpur, Kangra, Chamba, and Mandi, indicating the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rain.
A yellow alert has been sounded for Solan, Shimla, and Kullu districts, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) cautioning residents and tourists to remain watchful.
Delhi
A yellow alert has been issued in Delhi, where the monsoon is expected to arrive by Thursday, June 26.
Light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms is forecast for Delhi and surrounding areas over the next few days.
Other states
Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan during 24th to 30th June; over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad during 25th to 27th June; and over East Uttar Pradesh during 27th to 30th June.
A very heavy rainfall is likely over Uttarakhand during 24th to 27th June; West Rajasthan on 27th; East Rajasthan on 24th and 27th; Haryana and Punjab on 25th and 26th; West Uttar Pradesh on 25th and 27th; and Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad on 25th June.
Light to moderate rainfall at most or many places, accompanied by thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds of 30 to 40 kmph, is likely over Northwest India during 24th to 30th June.
Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Chhattisgarh during 24th to 28th June; over Vidarbha on 24th and 25th; over Gangetic West Bengal during 25th to 27th; and over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on 24th, 25th, 28th and 29th June. Very heavy rainfall is likely over Madhya Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on 24th June; Bihar on 28th; Jharkhand on 26th; and Odisha on 25th and 26th June.
Light to moderate rainfall at most or many places, accompanied by thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph, is likely over Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha during 24th to 30th June.
According to the IMD, rainfall activity is likely to increase over Northwest India from 25 June, with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over many parts of Central, East, and Northeast India during the next seven days.
