FOPL is simplified nutrition information on the front of food packaging which aims to help consumers with their food choices.
The first phase will comprise a mandatory warning on the packaging of baby food products clearly mentioning the quantity of sugar on a yellow slip, according to the sources. Zee Business also learned from sources that the size of the yellow slip will be determined by the proportion of sugar content in the product. For instance, if a product contains 10 per cent sugar, the yellow slip will mandatorily cover 10 per cent of the front side of the packaging, they said.
Analysts say such a move will impact food manufacturers such as Nestle, Patanjali and Wockhardt.
Preparation for colour warning on packets of ready-to-eat products. The first phase will include a warning on baby food packets. Yellow strips will be made mandatory to indicate sugar level. The sugar quantity will be written on the strip. The size of the strip will be in the same proportion.
