The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) said more than six lakh lost and stolen mobile phones have been recovered through its Sanchar Saathi platform. Launched in May 2023, the service lets users block missing devices across all telecom networks. Once a handset is blocked, any attempt to use it with a new SIM triggers an alert for the owner and the local police. Officials said the system is now helping trace nearly one phone every minute.

Recoveries see sharp rise

Data shared by the ministry shows recoveries rose from 28,115 in January 2025 to 45,243 in August 2025, an increase of 61 per cent over eight months. Officials said the improvement reflects closer coordination between DoT field units and state and UT police, supported by regular training exercises.

The ministry added that the 6 lakh milestone is more than just a number. Each recovery, it said, represents restored communication for citizens and prevents possible fraud linked to stolen devices.

Wider safety features

Sanchar Saathi has received over 19 crore website visits and more than 90 lakh downloads of its mobile app. Along with handset blocking, the platform includes tools such as:

1. Chakshu: report suspicious or fraudulent communications

2. Know Your Mobile Connections: check active SIMs registered in one’s name

3. Device Authenticity Verification: confirm IMEI numbers via portal, app or SMS to 14422

4. International Call Reporting: flag overseas calls using Indian caller IDs

5. Trusted Contact Details: access verified numbers of banks and financial institutions

The app is offered in Hindi, English and 21 regional languages to ensure accessibility nationwide.

The Ministry of Communications said Sanchar Saathi is central to the government's efforts to build a secure digital ecosystem under the Digital India programme. Citizens are encouraged to report lost or stolen handsets through the Sanchar Saathi portal or by downloading the app from Android and iOS platforms.
