Central Delhi witnessed heavy traffic congestion on Tuesday as Republic Day parade rehearsals brought movement to a crawl, leaving hundreds of commuters stranded. Several areas in South Delhi were also affected by the chaos.
Posting a photo of the gridlock near Kartavya Path, a user wrote on microblogging site X (formerly Twitter): "Is it too much to ask @dtptraffic to manage traffic? The entire central Delhi is choked."
Several others als complained about reaching work late or considering skipping office due to the jam-packed roads.
In South Delhi, commuters reported being stuck on MB Road for up to two hours. Some who opted for the metro to escape the traffic faced long queues at stations due to heightened security checks. A user on X shared a video from a metro station, lamenting, "Delhi metro, please! We can't afford such delays during peak hours. Corporate employees rely on the metro to avoid traffic."
Delhi Traffic advisory in wake of Republic Day
The Delhi Traffic Police had earlier issued advisories for traffic diversions due to full-dress rehearsals on 22nd January and the main Republic Day celebrations on 25th January. Key roads around Kartavya Path and Chhatrasal Stadium, where the state-level event will take place, are expected to face significant congestion.
Delhi Chief Minister Atishi will host the National Flag at Chhatrasal Stadium on 25th January. The event is expected to see the participation of ministers, MLAs, senior officials, schoolchildren, and the general public, alongside approximately 250 buses and 1,000 light vehicles.

Avoid these routes during restricted hours:
- Inner Ring Road: From IP College to Azadpur Chowk
- GTK Road: From Shakti Nagar to Azadpur Chowk
- Chhatrasal Stadium Road: Gujrawala Town
- Burari Chowk to Vijay Nagar T-Point: Via Camp Chowk
The restricted hours are from 6 am to 1 pm on both 22nd and 25th January. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes and stay informed through Delhi Traffic Police's official channels for real-time updates. Commuters are encouraged to plan their travel accordingly to avoid inconvenience during the Republic Day rehearsals and celebrations.
