Delhi Assembly's budget session will begin on Monday at 11 am, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) set to clash over the CAG report on the DTC and the "Mahila Samriddhi Yojana." The five-day session, which will conclude on March 28, will start with a "kheer" ceremony.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, who also holds the finance portfolio, will present the BJP government's first budget in more than 26 years. The BJP returned to power in Delhi after defeating AAP in last month’s Assembly elections, marking its first victory in the capital since 1998.
In a statement, AAP accused the BJP of "betraying" women by not delivering on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "guarantees" and launching a "brazen attack" on democracy, vowing to challenge the ruling party in the Assembly.
The Delhi Assembly Secretariat said the CAG report on the Delhi Transport Corporation's functioning will be tabled during the budget session. This will be the third CAG report presented in the House on Monday.
A key announcement in the Budget is expected to be the Mahila Samriddhi Yojana, under which BJP had promised Rs 2,500 per month to women from poor families. While Rs 5,100 crore has been sanctioned, beneficiary registration is yet to begin.
The session is expected to witness heated exchanges. AAP leader Atishi has accused the BJP of establishing “dictatorship” in the Assembly by suspending opposition MLAs. Meanwhile, BJP legislators plan to corner AAP over the CAG report on DTC’s performance during its tenure.
