COVID-19 cases in India continue to rise. According to the Union Health Ministry, as of June 10, 8 AM, there are 6,491 active cases in the country. In the last 24 hours, Gujarat reported the highest number (158) of cases.
Meanwhile, according to the latest bulletin released by INSACOG—the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium — India reported 163 cases of the newly found variant XFG. Maharashtra reported the highest number of cases of the new variant.

What is the XFG variant?
The Omicron subvariant XFG was initially identified in Canada. Four important spike mutations (His445Arg, Asn487Asp, Gln493Glu, and Thr572Ile) are present in XFG, which is derived from LF.7 and LP.8.1.2.
Other states that saw a rise in active cases included Delhi, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Sikkim, Odisha, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, and Bihar.
In Delhi, there are 728 active COVID-19 cases currently.
Amid rising COVID cases, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held a meeting with senior officials of every department and adviced citizens to remain cautious and not to get panicked. She said that all facilities were available in government hospitals.
CM Mamata Banerjee said, "Those who have comorbidities should consult the doctor. Government is always standing with them. Try to get treatment in a government hospital. It will not cost much. All the facilities are available in the government hospital. Now, the anti-COVID-19 vaccine is available. Everyone is vaccinated. We did the meeting to be cautious in future."
Madhya Pradesh's Gwalior district also saw a surge in the number of people infected with it, a senior official said on Monday.
There are a total of six active cases reported in the district so far, including three doctors, prompting health and district administration officials to remain on high alert.
