Covid-19 in India: Active cases jump to 7,400; 9 deaths in 24 hours; Kerala, Gujarat, and Delhi among worst hit

 India’s active Covid-19 cases rose to 7,400 on Saturday, with 269 fresh infections and nine more deaths reported in the last 24 hours, according to data released by the Union Health Ministry.

South India: Kerala, Karnataka see fresh spikes

Kerala continued to report the highest number of active Covid-19 cases in the country at 2,109. The state also reported three of the nine deaths recorded on Saturday. The deceased included an 83-year-old male with cardiac history, a 67-year-old post-renal transplant patient, and a 61-year-old man with diabetes and hypertension.

Karnataka reported the second-highest daily spike in active cases with 132 new infections, taking its total to 527. Tamil Nadu reported 12 new cases, with the active tally standing at 232. One death was reported from the state — a 73-year-old man with multiple comorbidities including recurrent stroke and viral encephalitis. Andhra Pradesh saw 15 new cases, bringing its active tally to 102, while Telangana added three fresh cases with eight active patients overall.

West India: Gujarat, Maharashtra remain under watch

Gujarat registered a sharp uptick with 79 new cases, raising its active count to 1,437 — the second highest in the country. The state also recorded two deaths.

Maharashtra, with 613 active cases, reported four deaths on Saturday. The deceased included an 85-year-old man with uremic encephalopathy and heart failure, a 79-year-old diabetic with hypertension, a 55-year-old cancer patient with bacterial pneumonia, and a 34-year-old man with severe bilateral bronchopneumonia.

Rajasthan reported seven new cases, pushing its total active cases to 180. The state reported one death involving a 70-year-old woman with bilateral pneumonia.

Goa (6), Sikkim (50), and Puducherry (10) reported smaller spikes, while no fresh cases were reported in Daman & Diu or Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

North India: Delhi reports 42 new cases

Delhi added 42 new Covid cases, taking its active count to 672. The capital also reported eight deaths in the last 24 hours — one of the highest daily death tolls among all states.

Uttar Pradesh reported three new cases and now has 248 active cases. Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand saw minor changes. Rajasthan and Jammu & Kashmir each reported small spikes, while Chandigarh did not record any new case.

East & Northeast India: Stable but under watch

West Bengal’s active case tally stood at 747, with no new additions in the last 24 hours. However, one death was recorded from the state, and the health ministry noted that data reconciliation is awaited.

Bihar reported five new cases, taking its active count to 41. Jharkhand reported one death, a 25th active case. Assam added six cases, while Odisha saw two.

Most northeastern states — including Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Tripura — reported zero or very few cases. Sikkim reported 11 new cases and currently has 50 active patients.

Nationwide figures

India’s Covid-19 death toll now stands at 87 for the year 2025, with 11,967 people recovering from the virus so far. In the last 24 hours, 991 patients recovered.

Cardiovascular risks post-Covid

Adding to concerns, a recent study published in the Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology journal highlights that Covid-19 survivors face nearly double the risk of developing cardiovascular conditions such as heart attacks and strokes for up to three years post-infection. The risks are significantly higher in those who were not vaccinated.
