In India, about 1500 people have been tested positive with the virus and the country has been put under a 21-day lockdown. The government is asking people to stay at home and maintain social distancing.

It is very important to understand what is social distancing in order to practice it right. In simple words, it means that you should maintain a specific distance from another human. Social distancing doesn’t mean that you could not be in the same room with another person. You just need to maintain some distance from them.

Now the next question is that how much distance is safe? Well, the World Health Organisation on its official website asks people to maintain about 1 metre of distance with anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
“Maintain at least 1 metre (3 feet) distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing, WHO said on its website.

Why is social distancing required?
The World Health Organisation explains that the liquid droplets that are sprayed when someone coughs of sneezes might contain virus and can infect you as well, if the person is also infected.
“When someone coughs or sneezes they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth which may contain virus. If you are too close, you can breathe in the droplets, including the COVID-19 virus if the person coughing has the disease,” it says.
How to practice social distancing?
The best way to practice social distancing is by staying at home. This is why the Indian government has announced a 21-day lockdown. There is no need to panic during this period and you should only take the required precautions.
